It is a shallow, clayey soil classified as a Typic Hapludalf sitting on steep Southern Coastal Plain terrain. Bub soils do not drain well and become saturated quickly during heavy rain. On sloped land, that saturation pushes water toward lower-lying structures and foundation perimeters before surface drainage can respond.
Mt. Selman (also historically recorded as Selman) is an unincorporated community in northern Cherokee County, situated at the intersection of U.S. Route 69 and Farm to Market Road 177, approximately 3 miles north of Jacksonville. The community was established in 1884 along the Kansas and Gulf Short Line Railroad. It was named for Dr. James Selman, who donated land for the settlement. By 1892 it had grown to include a gristmill, gin, church, general store, drugstore, and several other businesses, and it served as a shipping point for peaches, plums, and tomatoes grown in the area. Population peaked around 500 in 1914 before the community declined gradually over the following decades.
