Established in the early 1870s at the junction of the Texas and Pacific Railway and the Tyler Tap narrow-gauge line, the settlement grew around the railroad switch and was incorporated as Big Sandy on June 21, 1926, according to the Texas State Historical Association Handbook of Texas. The town sits at the intersection of U.S. Highway 80 and Texas State Highway 155, approximately 14 miles southwest of the Upshur County seat at Gilmer.
The town has a deep connection to railroad history: the railroad switch that gave it its first name was named after Big Sandy Creek, which runs through the area. The Sabine River flows just south of town. In the 19th century, Walters' Bluff Ferry operated on the Sabine for local crossing. Big Sandy grew to become a regional commercial and shipping center by 1990, supported by lumber, cotton, and livestock production in the surrounding county.
