About Angelina County
Angelina County is centered on Lufkin, a city of roughly 36,000 that serves as the largest community in the Angelina River basin and the commercial hub for a wide swath of deep East Texas. Lufkin's economy has historically been anchored by the timber and paper industries, it was home to one of the largest integrated sawmill and paper mill operations in the country, and by a significant manufacturing sector that includes several industrial employers. The Davy Crockett National Forest lies to the north and west of the county, and the Sam Rayburn Reservoir, one of the largest lakes in Texas by volume, sits to the south in neighboring Sabine and Jasper counties.
Housing in Angelina County spans a wider range than its population might suggest. Lufkin's industrial heritage produced distinct working-class neighborhoods in north and south Lufkin with modest wood-frame homes built from the 1930s through the 1960s, many on pier-and-beam. The city's west side has seen suburban development with slab-on-grade brick homes. Rural areas of Angelina County include timber company land and scattered rural residential properties, some of which are older farmsteads with original structures that have been patched and modified over generations. The combination of industrial history and rural character means asbestos and lead-based paint are present in a meaningful portion of the older housing stock.
Deep East Texas receives among the highest annual precipitation in the state, and Lufkin regularly experiences significant rainfall events. The Angelina River and its tributaries can flood bottomland areas substantially. High humidity throughout most of the year makes mold a persistent risk in any structure with moisture management deficiencies. Industrial-area residential properties in north and south Lufkin can present complex remediation environments when older construction meets decades of deferred maintenance.
